 In collaboration with the U.S.-India Aviation Cooperation Program and the Government of India, US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) is hosted the 6th U.S.-India Aviation Summit in Mumbai, India. The two-day Summit promoted a high-level dialogue on bilateral aviation issues and will provide a forum to identify solutions that support the rapid growth of India's aviation sector. The American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) is organizing this visit on behalf of USTDA.

 Vice President Venkaiah Naidu arrived in Peru on the third leg of his three-nation visit to Central America. During his visit to Peru, he will be meeting with the top leaders of the country and discuss various issues of mutual interest. Both the counties will review the entire spectrum of bilateral relations including Trade and Commerce, Investments, Information Technology, Capacity building, Traditional medicines, Space, Defence, Culture and others.

 Mahathir Mohamad was sworn in as Prime Minister of Malaysia. He took the oath at the Istana Negara Palace in Kuala Lumpur. Mahathir’s coalition, Pakatan Harapan, won 113 of the total 222 seats. He has replaced Najib Razak. His coalition defeated the governing Barisan Nasional coalition, led by Prime Minister Najib Razak, which has been in power for more than 60 years.  Ninety-two-year-old, Mahathir becomes the oldest Prime Minister in the world.

 Every year, `National Technology Day' is celebrated across India on May 11 to memorize the anniversary of Shakti, the Pokhran nuclear test held on 11 May 1998. The day glorifies the importance of science in day to day life and motivates students to adopt science as the career option. The National Technology Day 2018 theme is “Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future”. The first nuclear test Pokhran with a code named as ‘Smiling Buddha’ was carried out in May, 1974. Pokran II or Operation Shakti was initiated on 11th of May, 1998 with the detonation of two fission bombs and one fusion bomb. Two additional fission bombs were detonated on 13th of May, 1998 and the Government of India run by Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the then Prime Minister shortly convened a press conference for the declaration of India as a full-fledged nuclear state.

 Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu inaugurated the state’s biggest solar power plant at Energy Awareness Park in the presence of Power Minister Tamiyo Taga in Itanagar. The plant, with a capacity of 1 MW, was commissioned on April 1 at an estimated investment of Rs 8.50 crore. The officials of Arunachal Pradesh Energy Development Agency (APEDA) successfully implemented the project.

  Telecom regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) issued a draft to amend interconnect regulations, proposing certain changes in terms and conditions for operators to seek fresh call connect ports from other telcos. The 'draft Telecommunication Interconnection (Amendment) Regulations 2018' proposed that a service provider can ask another operator for additional ports, in case the projected utilisation of the capacity is likely to exceed 85% over 60 day period.

  External Affairs Minister (EAM) Sushma Swaraj left on a two-day visit to Myanmar. The visit is part of ongoing high-level interaction between the governments of India and Myanmar. During her visit, Swaraj will hold discussions with the Myanmar leadership on bilateral, regional and multilateral issues of mutual interest to both countries.

  The leaders of China, Japan and South Korea met in Tokyo against the backdrop of historic diplomatic moves by North Korea and a push for the isolated country to give up its nuclear weapons. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and South Korean President Moon Jae-in held talks in the first three-way summit in two-and-a-half years. The leaders also discussed cooperation on economic issues.

  India and Panama have signed 2 agreements on the exemption of Visas for holders of Diplomatic and Official Passports and in the field of Agriculture. These agreements were signed during the second leg of  Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu. These ties are based on common values and a shared commitment to democracy, pluralism, and multi-culturalism of both the countries. 2 centres for Biodiversity and Innovation will be setup by India in Panama worth US $10 mn and US $15 mn each.

  The 15th Finance Commission has constituted an advisory council to advise and assist the commission. The six-member council will be headed by the President of Forum for Strategic Initiatives, Arvind Virmani. The role and functions of the council will be to advise the commission on any issue or subject related to the Terms of Reference (ToR) of the Commission. Besides, the council will also assist the commission in the preparation of any paper or research study which will enhance the Commission’s understanding on the issues containing in its ToR.
