Pollution of Air and Water   Pollution Our environment is our surrounding. It comprises all living and non-living things. Any undesirable change in the physical, chemical or biological characters of air, water and soil leads to environmental pollution which is harmful to human beings directly or indirectly.   Pollutant A pollutant is a substance that may be added to the environment directly or indirectly by man or natural events, to an extent which adversely affects humans, animals, vegetation and other materials.   Air Pollution Air pollution is defined as the addition of undesirable materials into the atmosphere either due to human activities which adversely affect the quality of the air and hence life on earth or through natural process like volcanic eruptions.   Causes of Air Pollution
  • Burning of fossil fuels 2. Motor vehicles
  • Thermal power plants 4. Industries
  • Human activities 6. Volcanic eruptions
  •   Greenhouse Effect Greenhouse effect may be defined as a phenomenon that enables the earth's atmosphere to trap the heat from the sun and prevent it from escaping into the outer space, there by warming the earth's surface.   Acid Rain The burning of fossil fuels containing sulphur, nitrogen and carbon produces acidic oxides of these elements. Carbon dioxide, an oxide of carbon, dissolves in water droplets to produce carbonic acid (a weak acid). The oxides of sulphur and nitrogen react with water to form sulphuric acid \[({{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}})\] and nitric acid \[(HN{{O}_{3}})\] respectively. These acids come down to earth with rain water.   Water Pollution Water is a natural resource. About seventy one percent surface of the earth is covered with water and is called hydrosphere. There is plenty of water on our planet, but its distribution is not uniform. About 97.4% of the total water on the earth is present in oceans. Only 0.01% of the total water on the earth, is available as freshwater, is used by us and other living beings. The water in the oceans is so salty that it cannot be used for most purposes.   Sources of Water Pollution
    • Domestic waste
    • Industrial waste
    • Agricultural waste
Effect of Pollution on Water Bodies
    • Oxygen Depletion
    • Toxicity
    • Algal bloom
    Water borne diseases

Reasoning and Aptitude     Learning process is dependent on ones ability to think logically and reason quickly and effectively. So Reasoning and logic skills are an important part in our progress as these skills are very useful in our day to day lives. In this chapter, we will learn various problems related to reasoning and aptitude.   Problems Based on Blood Relations The efficiency in doing the problems of blood relations depends upon the knowledge of the blood relations. Some of the important relations are given below,   Relations of Paternal Side
    • Father's father \[\to \] Grandfather
    • Father's mother \[\to \] Grandmother
    • Father's brother \[\to \] Uncle
    • Father's sister \[\to \] Aunt
    • Children of uncle \[\to \] Cousin
    • Wife of uncle \[\to \] Aunt
    • Children of aunt \[\to \] Cousin
    • Husband of aunt \[\to \] Uncle
      Relations of Maternal Side
    • Mother's father \[\to \] Maternal grandfather
    • Mother's mother \[\to \] Maternal grandmother
    • Mother's brother \[\to \] Maternal uncle
    • Mother's sister \[\to \] Aunt
    • Children of maternal uncle \[\to \] Cousin
    • Wife of maternal uncle \[\to \] Maternal aunt
Note:   (i) My mother's or father's son is my Brother. (ii) My mother's or father's daughter is my Sister. (iii) My mother's or father's father is my Grandfather. (iv) My mother's or father's sister is my Aunt.
    • Example:
      How is Hema's mother's mother's daughter - in law's daughter related to Hema? (a) Sister                      (b) Mother (c) Cousin                    (d) Aunt (e) None of these   Answer (c) Explanation: Hema's mother's mother \[\to \] Hema's (Maternal) grandmother Hema's Grandmother's Daughter - in - law \[\to \] Hema's (Maternal) Aunt Hema's Aunt's daughter \[\to \] Hema's Cousin
    • Example:
Pointing towards a lady in a photograph, a girl said, "She is the sister of my mother's husband". How is the girl related to the lady? (a) Daughter                (b) Niece (c) Sister                      (d) Daughter or niece (e) None of these   Answer (c) Explanation: My Mother's husband \[\to \] My Father My Father's sister \[\to \] My Aunt So the girl is niece of the lady.   Problems Based on Input-Output   Direction for example: Given an input line the relations arranges the words and numbers step by step in a systematic manner as illustrated below: Input: subsidy 76 48 follow 35 next 63 must Step I:  35 subsidy 76 48 follow next 63 must Step II: 35 subsidy 48 76 follow next 63 must Step III: 35 subsidy 48 next 76 follow 63 must Step IV: 35 subsidy 48 next 63 76 follow must Step V: 35 subsidy 48 next 63 must 76 follow   Output in Step V is the final output and Step VI is the last step. As per the rules followed in the above steps, find out in each of the following questions the appropriate step for the given input. more...

Essay   GUJARAT EARTHQUAKE   On 26th January 2001 when India was celebrating its Republic Day, one of its states, Gujarat, felt nature?s wrath in the form of an earthquake. It was of a very high intensity measuring 7.9 on Richter Scale. Thousands of people lost their lives, lakhs became homeless and penniless. The preliminary tremors were followed by the main shocks which rocked the whole of Gujarat But the worst affected areas areas were Bhuj, Anjar, Ahmedabad, etc. Within few seconds, the buildings came trembling down and people were buried alive under the rubble. Many people lost their near ones on this fateful day. The school building collapsed and four hundred students celebrating republic day, died. The cries were heard everywhere, the cries of pain, of death, of separation. It seemed everyone was caught in the traps of death. There was horror and fright in the eyes of the people of Gujarat. That day children became orphans, women became widows and the rich became poor. The savings of the people, shattered. People were in a state of shock at this natural calamity which hit them so badly. All the telephone, telegraph and electricity lines were cut off. The people were without food and water for two days till the full-fledged aid reached them. The rescue operation was started by the government and the social organisations. Medical aid was provided at various places. Funds had been raised and people and the government had given liberal donations for the victims. But it was one ghastly sight and people of Gujarat have still to rise from the aftershocks of earthquake be it emotionally or financially. We pray to God to give them the strength to start their life all over again.   GAUTAM BUDDHA             Gautam Buddha?s birthplace was Lumbini. Buddha was named Gautam by his father. He was the ruler of a tribe known as Sakys. At the time of his birth the saints had predicted that either he would be a brave king or a saint. So his father provided him with all the comforts and luxuries of life. He was married to a princess ?Yashodhara? and had a son named ?Rahul? from this marriage. The sight of an old sick man. a dead and a saint troubled him. He became unhappy and was not satisfied with his life He wanted to move out of his palace and into the real world outside the comforts of his palace. One night he left his palace in search of truth. He wandered for six years. Then one day at ?Gaya? in Bihar under a Bodhi tree he found enlightenment. He preached the path of ?Ahinsa? and how desires and wishes were root cause of all sorrows. He gave the world his famous ?eight principles? to be followed by everyone. A large number of people became his followers. His fame reached all over the world. The great king Ashoka adopted Buddhism and spread it in more...

Paragraph   CORRUPTION   Corruption is the biggest curse to our society. Corruption has taken over all the status of our society. It is present in schools, in colleges, in work places and even with medical facility providers. The citizens have become blind with the glitter of gold. The moral and ethical values are eroding. The species called honesty is getting extinct. Corruption can be eradicated from our society if we open our eyes towards the future and became selfless.   A DAY IN A JUNGLE (CLOSE TO NATURE)   Being face to face with nature is really a very pleasant experience of life. It thrills us. Fills our heart with happiness. Me and my friends were going to a picnic place, but in between the bus got out of order. We were forced to leave the bus. We saw all around us was a very dense jungle. We all went there. That was a great experience, to our amazement we saw all the animals were busy in their activities. The rabbit was searching for carrot. Butterflies were fly over the flowers. Cows, buffalos, goats, etc., were grazing the grass, deer were playing. Birds were chirping. Elephants were resting. One of my friends took pictures of all these. This experience was like a dream come true.   A REAL ACCIDENT   One day I was travelling from Ghaziabad to Delhi by bus. Everything was very peaceful. The weather was cool and it was showering a little. So it was giving the feel of winter. I was just looking out of the window, what I saw was very shocking. A very fast running cab struck a road side pole. The cab fully got destroyed. The cab caught fire and within few minutes it blasted like a bomb. People gathered there to save the life of driver because the cab. Otherwise the scene might have been very worse. Fortunately before the collision of cab with pole, driver fell down from the cab. His life was saved. This filled the heart of all other people with fear, and all were thanking God for saving his life.   FILM FESTIVAL   Films are the mirror of the society. What is happening around us, they try to show it to us so that we can understand. Film festivals are organised every year so that the best work can be appraised. Best actors, actresses could be given honour. Film festival gives recognition to all, whosoever are associated with the film. It motivates who are associated with the film industry. Film festival is a common platform where all the members of film industry get together and share their thoughts and views. Rewards really boost the career. It gives new height to the associated members of the nominated movie. Let us say if Katrina Kaif gets best actress award for any of her movie, then she will be very busy. Film festival is celebrated in a very cheerful manner. more...

Judging Story Logic   In this chapter, we will learn to make a logical story from the given sentences or incidents in jumbled form. First two are solved as an example for you.   ·                     Example 1     1.            Arrange P,Q,R and S between A and B in order to make a sensible story A: Many people know that instead of soap, Gandhiji used a stone to scrub himself Very few people, however, know how precious this stone, given by Miraben, was to Gandhiji.   R: On reaching the village she went straight to the weaver's house that had been their last halt. An old woman lived there. And she had thrown the stone away. When Manuben found it after a difficult search her joy knew no bounds.   P: This happened during the Noakhali march, when Gandhiji and others halted at a village called Narayanpur. During the march, the responsibility of looking after this particular stone, along with other things, lay with Manuben. Unfortunately, though, she forgot the stone at the last halting place. ?I want you to go back and look for the stone,? said Bapu. ?Only then will you not forget it the next time.? ?May I take a volunteer with me?? ?Why??   Q: Poor Manu. She did not have the courage to say that the way back lay through forests of coconut and supari, (betel nut) so dense that a stranger might easily lose his way. Moreover, it was the time of riots. How could she go back alone? But go she did, and alone; after all she had committed the error. Leaving Narayanpur at 9:30 in the morning, Manu trudged along the forest path, taking the name of Ram as she went.   S: Carrying the precious stone, she returned to Narayanpur by late afternoon. Placing it in Bapu?s lap she burst into tears. ?You have no idea how happy I feel. This stone has been my cherished companion for the past twenty-five years. Whether in prison or in a palace it has been with me. Had it been lost it would have distressed me and Miraben as well. Now, you have seen that every useful thing is worth taking care of, even a stone.?   B: Manuben said, ?Bapu, if ever I took Ramanaam with all my heart it was today.? Bapu laughed and replied, ?Oh yes, one remembers the Lord only when one is in trouble.?   Select the correct option among the given choices: (a) PSRQ                       (b) QSRP (c) RPQS                       (d) SPQR (e) None of these Ans.     (c) RPQS     2.            Arrange P, Q, R and S between A and B in more...

Judging Logic of Actions   In this section we have to arrange the actions in a sequence. Some examples are solved to develop your understanding.   ·                     Example 1   Arrange P, Q, R and S in order to find the correct logical sequence of actions. P: A saintly monk was leading a life of meditation near a village. The villagers used to give him food and respect his words of wisdom. One day the villagers rushed into his hermitage in a rage. They pushed a girl to his front and accused him of raping the girl as she had confessed before them that the monk was responsible for her pregnancy.   Q: Twelve years passed. Then, one day the villagers came tearfully to the monk and begged his pardon for suspecting his sanctity. They had identified the culprit who had made the girl pregnant. He was now ready to accept the girl and child.   R: The girl who was afraid of the miscreant had then told the name of the monk instead. The monk, without any excitement, repeated his earlier question ?Is it so?? Then he entrusted the girl and the child to the villagers and silently resumed his meditation.   S: He was innocent, but did not try to defend himself He calmly asked them, ?Is it so?? He readily agreed to support the girl in his hermitage. The villagers stopped feeding the sage and they started to ridicule him. To support him and the girl, the monk went to the forest and cut firewood. By selling the firewood, he could earn food for them. The girl delivered a baby and he supported them whole-heartedly   Select your answer from the given choices: (a) PRSQ                       (b) SQRP (c) PSQR                       (d) SRQP (e) None of these Ans.     (c)     ·                     Example 2   Arrange P, Q, R and S in order to find the correct logical sequence of actions. P: ?Ah, but barbers DO exist! That?s what happens when people do not come to me.? ?Exactly!? affirmed the customer. "That's the point! God, too DOES exist! That?s what happens when people do not go to Him and don?t look up to Him for help. That?s why there's so much pain and suffering in the world.?   Q: ?Why do you say that?? asked the customer. ?Well, you just have to go out in the street to realise that God doesn't exist. Tell me, if God exists, would there be so many sick people? Would there be abandoned children? If God existed, there would be neither suffering nor pain. I can't imagine a loving God who would allow all of these things." The customer thought for a moment, but didn?t respond because he didn't want to start an argument. The barber finished his job and the customer left the shop.   R: A man went to a more...

Judging Completeness of Process   ·                     Example 1    Arrange P, Q, R, S in order to describe the completeness of process.   P: By 7 o'clock I got ready and left for the examination centre though the examination was to start at nine. When I reached the examination centre, my friends, Simran and Sahil, had already arrived there.   Q: I got up at 4 a.m. and had a cup of tea. I studied till 6 o'clock and, thus, gave a quick revision to all topics.   R: We discussed the important topics. Then we had a cup of tea in the school canteen. Then we entered the examination centre. We were full of confidence and had no fear of the examination.   S: Many students were enthusiastically preparing for the paper. The bell rang and we were in the hall.   (a) QRPS                       (b) QPRS (c) QRSP                       (d) PQRS (e) None of these Ans.     (b)   ·                     Example 2   In the following descriptions find out the step in which the process is completed.   P: Very few have their own vehicles. Most of them cannot afford to hire taxi or a scooter. So, they have to travel by bus. For their convenience D.T.C. has made a provision to issue a bus pass to daily commuters at concessional rate.   Q: In a metropolitan city like Delhi, people have to travel long distances to reach their place of work.   R: You fill it up and sign it. Then you have to deposit the due amount and get the bus pass for the route you have applied for.   S: Every D.TC. Depot has counter for issuing a bus pass to those who apply for it. The process of applying for a bus pass is quite simple. First of all, you have to obtain a printed application form the D.TC.
