 Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for National Centre for Ageing at All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. The Centre will be developed at cost of Rs. 330 crores and shall be completed by February 2020.

The Centre will provide state of art clinical care to elderly population and shall play key role in guiding research in field of geriatric medicine and related specialties. It will also serve as key training facility for under graduate and post graduate courses. It will provide multi-specialty health care and will have 200 general ward beds, which will include 20 medical ICU beds.
  • 555 bed Super Speciality Block in Safdarjung Hospital
Prime Minister also inaugurated 555 bed Super Speciality Block in Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi which hosts tertiary care facilities in areas of cardiovascular sciences, neurosciences, pulmonary medicine, nephrology and endocrinology He also dedicated 300 bedded Power Grid Vishram Sadan funded by the Power Grid Corporation in AIIMS. It is  300 bedded night shelter facility meant for patients and their relatives visiting AIIMS main hospital and JPNA Trauma centre at AIIMS. He also inaugurated underground tunnel providing connecting facility between AIIMS and JPNA Trauma Centre, reducing commute time between the two centers.

 The Indian Railways has eliminated all unmanned level crossings (UMLC) from its four zones viz. West Central Railway, Central Railway, Eastern Railway and South East Central Railway. These four zones aggregating 11,545 route kilometers have now become UMLC free on broad gauge route.

Indian Railways has target of September 2018 for eliminating UMLC in 11 zones of its total 16 zones. For the remaining zones, the target is has been set before 2020. So far, all UMLCs on routes having speed more than 100 kmph and on suburban routes have been eliminated, except 13 such crossings in South Central Railway which will be completed by July 2018.  
  • Elimination all unmanned level crossings
Union Railway Ministry has taken series of safety steps to prevent accidents at these unmanned railway crossings.   Indian Railways has around 30,348 level crossings, out of which 11,563 i.e. nearly 40%, are unmanned.     Some of safety initiatives undertaken at these unmanned railway crossings include closing of many crossings, construction of rail overbridge and rail underbridge. At certain places Gate Mitra and Gate Counsellors are also deployed. Indian Railways also has partnered with India Space Research Organistion (ISRO) to safety crossing system using Geo-spatial technologies. These technologies will include combination of Global Positioning System (GPS), Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing in order to send mobile message alerts to people in vicinity of an unmanned level crossing.

 India has pledged USD 5 million in assistance to the UN agency working for the welfare of Palestinian refugees to help bolster its "severe funding crisis" following US' cut in its annual aid to United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). A total of 20 countries, including India, announced contributions to the 2018 budget of the UNRWA for Palestine Refugees in the Near East during a meeting. While India pledged USD 5 million, Sweden will contribute USD 250 million over four years, the UK USD 51 million and the UAE USD 50 million among other donors.

 United States  of America (US) has postponed its inaugural 2+2 dialogue with India which was scheduled to be held on July 6, 2018 in Washington DC, citing “unavoidable reasons”. Both countries are now identifying new mutually convenient dates to hold dialogue at the earliest, either in India or in US. This is third time that 2+2 dialogue has been postponed in the last six months.
  • India-US 2+2 Dialogue
India-US 2+2 Dialogue format was agreed to between two countries during visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to US in June, 2017. It was aimed at replacing earlier India-US Strategic and Commercial Dialogue. It is aimed enhancing strategic coordination between both countries and maintaining peace and stability in Indo-Pacific region. It puts strategic, defence and security relationship between the two countries at the forefront and centre stage. It insulates India-US strategic relationship from feuds over trade issues and deep divide on economic integration policies as trade and commercial issues that collided with strategic relationship between both countries’ discussed in Strategic and Commercial Dialogue earlier. It is similar to India-Japan 2+2 dialogue format between foreign and defence secretaries of the two countries.

 The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) proposed a draft bill to repeal the University Grants Commission (UGC) and set up the Higher Education Commission of India (HECI). This move that aims to reform higher education in India. The HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar stated that the draft Act is in accordance with the commitment of Government for reforming the regulatory systems that provide for more autonomy and facilitate the holistic growth of the education system. The Act entitled ‘Higher Education Commission of India Act, 2018 (Repeal of University Grants Commission Act)’ revamps UGC Act, 1951 and its parent legislation completely. The HECI Act, 2018 is expected to be introduced in Parliament in the upcoming monsoon session.

 The US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley is in India for the 2-day visit. During her two-day visit, Haley will meet with senior Indian government officials, NGO leaders, and the interfaith community to underscore the United States’ shared values and strong alliance with the people of India. Haley, the daughter of Sikh immigrants from Punjab, is the first Indian-American to serve in a Cabinet-level position in any US presidential administration.

 President of India, Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the Udyam Sangam-2018 in New Delhi. It is a step forward towards consolidating the convergence and synergy of all the government initiatives relating to MSME Sector. The President of India launched the Solar Charkha Mission which will cover 50 clusters and every cluster will employ 400 to 2000 artisans. The Mission has been approved by the Government of India for which the MSME Ministry will disburse subsidy of Rs. 550 crores to the artisans. A portal of the Ministry of MSME called “Sampark” was also unveiled by the President. This portal will act as a bridge between the talent pool and those enterprises seeking trained manpower.

 Ten new Swachh Iconic Places of the country came up with the thorough action plans for raising their sanitation standards to exemplary levels. The plans were formulated at a two-day consultation in Hyderabad held between Central and State Government agencies, local administrations and the Trusts of the iconic places. Over 100 delegates from across the country attended the consultation. All the 30 Swachh Iconic Places, selected so far under the Swachh Bharat Mission, also resolved to make their sites completely free of plastic.

 Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of Paperless Vanijya Bhawan in New Delhi. Once ready, the new building will house Department of Commerce. The building will accommodate about 1000 officers and staff. It will be a completely paperless office with state of the art facilities such as smart access control, central air-conditioning, video conferencing, and completely networked systems. The Department of Commerce is currently housed in Udyog Bhawan.

 Human Resources Development Minister Prakash Javadekar launched the National Digital Library of India (NDLI). The library will become a single window platform for all educational needs. Users can register for free on the National Digital Library from Google Play store. The library can be accessed atndl.iitkgp.ac.in. The library is an integrated platform for schools, colleges, universities, teachers, and students. Over 35 lakh e-books in more than 200 languages are available in the library.
