Corpus luteum in pregnancy has a long life. However, if fertilization does not take place, it remains active only for 10-12 days. Explain.

    Answer:

The ruptured Graafian follicle transform into the corpus luteum and secretes large amounts of progesterone which is essential for the maintenance of the endometrium. Such anendometrium is required for the implantation of fertilized ovum (blastocyst) and other events of pregnancy. That's why corpus luteum in pregnancy has a long life. But in the absence of fertilization, maintenance of endometrium is not required. Therefore, corpus luteum degenerates within10-12 days.
