Dipole moment of phenol is smaller than that of methanol. Why ?

    Answer:

In phenol, C ? O bond is less polar due to electron-withdrawing effect of the benzene ring whereas in methanol, C?O bond is more polar due to +I-effect of the  group. As a result, phenol has lower dipole moment (1-54 D) than methanol (1-71 D).
