Explain why low molecular mass alcohols are soluble in water.

    Answer:

Solubility of alcohols in  is due to H-bonding between the O?H group of alcohols and  molecules. The hydrocarbon part (i. e., R group) on the other hand, tends to prevent the formation of H-bonds and thus tends to decrease the solubility of alcohols in . Since in lower molecular mass alcohols, the hydrocarbon part is small, therefore, lower molecular mass alcohols are soluble in water.
