Why does acetylation of  group of aniline reduce its activating effect?

    Answer:

As explained in Ans. to Q. 39, due to electron-withdrawing effect of the acetyl group, the lone pair of electrons on N-atom is attracted by the C = O group. As a result, lone pair of electrons on N-atom is not exclusively available for donation to the benzene ring and hence activating effect of the  group is reduced.
