The purification of
bauxite containing silica as the main impurity is done by Serpeck's process.
The powdered ore is mixed with coke and heated to about 2073 K in an atmosphere
of nitrogen. Silica (SiO2) is reduced to silicon which being
volatile escapes. Alumina (Al2O3) is converted into
aluminium nitride (AIN) by reacting with nitrogen. It is hydrolysed upon
heating with water to get the precipitate of AI(OH)3. From the
precipitate, Al2O3 is recovered just same as in Baeyer?s
process.
