12th Class Chemistry Haloalkanes and Haloarenes / हैलोएल्केन तथा हैलोएरीन्स

  • question_answer 109)
Discuss the nature of C-X bond in the haloarenes.

    Answer:

Due to higher electronegativity of halogen (X) over carbon, the C-X bond in haloarenes is polar. Further, the lone pair of electrons on the X atom are delocalized over the benzene ring. As a result, C-X bond in haloarenes acquires some double bond character (for resonance structures of chlorobenzene, refer to page 10/41). Due to donation of the lone pair of electrons on X towards the benzene ring and partial double bond character of the C-X bond, the C-X bond in haloarenes is less polar than in alkyi halides. This is supported by the observation that dipole moment of chlorobenzene (1 -69 D) is little lower than that of (1-83 D).
