Describe some features of catalysis by zeolites.

    Answer:

Features of catalysis by zeolites. (i) Zeolites are alumino silicates with general formula Mx/n [(AlO2) x (SiO)y mH2O where n = valency of cation. These have three dimensional network porous structure. (ii) The pores contain water. These are heated so that water from the pores is lost and the pores become vacant. (iii) Their pore size varies from 260 pm to 740 pm. Only those molecules which can be adsorbed in these pores are catalyzed i.e., they are selective molecular sieves and selective catalyst. An important zeolite used in the petroleum industry is ZSM-5 (zeolite sieve of molecular porosity 5). It converts alcohol into petrol.
