(i) Zeolites are
alumino silicates with general formula Mx/n [(AlO2) x (SiO)y mH2O
where n = valency
of cation.
These have three
dimensional network porous structure.
(ii) The pores
contain water. These are heated so that water from the pores is lost and the
pores become vacant.
(iii) Their pore
size varies from 260 pm to 740 pm. Only those molecules which can be adsorbed
in these pores are catalyzed i.e., they are selective molecular sieves and
selective catalyst. An important zeolite used in the petroleum industry is
ZSM-5 (zeolite sieve of molecular porosity 5). It converts alcohol into petrol.
