    What was the role of the zamindar in Mughal administration?    

    Answer:

    The main source of income available to Mughal rulers was tax on the produce of the peasantry. The zamindars' main duty was collect these taxes and submit the same to the central government's revenue department. These zamindars were known as intermediaries, whether they were local headmen of villages or powerful chieftains. In some areas the zamindars exercised a great deal of power.
