Write a response to the following arguments against democracy   (a) Army is the most disciplined and corruption-free organization in the country. Therefore army should rule the country.   (b) Rule of the majority means the rule of ignorant people. What we need is the rule of the wise, even if they are in small numbers.   (c) If we want religious leaders to guide us in spiritual matters, why not invite them to guide us in politics as well. The country should be ruled by religious leaders.  

Answer:

(a) The army is for the defense of the country. Even if it is the most disciplined and corruption free organization it should not be allowed to rule the country as its primary duty is defense and men governance. Military rule is nothing but dictatorship. Many army men are not disciplined and corrupt.   (b) Rule of majority is democratic as it represents the views of all sections of people. Illiterate and poor people cannot be called ignorant. At least they can realize which representative is good for them. There is no guarantee that the educated people will make the right choices and not have their own interests to promote; Democracy mean equal opportunity to all without any discrimination.   (c) The third statement is wrong. We should not mix religion and politics especially in a multi-racial multi-religious and multi-lingual country like India. Because it will lead to conflict between the different religious and linguistic groups, just as it had happened in Sri Lanka between the Tamils and the Sinhalese. Besides, many religious leaders do not have any experience of administration.
