8th Class Mathematics Direct and Inverse Proportions

  • question_answer 1)
If a box of sweets is divided among 24 children, they will get 5 sweets each. How many would each get, if the number of the children is reduced by 4?

    Answer:

Suppose that each would get \[x\] sweets. Thus, we have the following table.
    Number of children 24 \[24-4=20\]
    Number of sweets 5 \[x\]
Lesser the number of children, more is will be the number of sweets each would get. So, this is a case of inverse proportion.       Hence,       \[24\times 5=20\times x\] \[\Rightarrow \]               \[x=\frac{24\times 5}{20}\] \[\Rightarrow \]               \[x=6\] Hence, each would get 6 sweets.
