On 26th January 2001 when India was celebrating its Republic Day, one of its states, Gujarat, felt nature?s wrath in the form of an earthquake. It was of a very high intensity measuring 7.9 on Richter Scale. Thousands of people lost their lives, lakhs became homeless and penniless. The preliminary tremors were followed by the main shocks which rocked the whole of Gujarat But the worst affected areas areas were Bhuj, Anjar, Ahmedabad, etc.

Within few seconds, the buildings came trembling down and people were buried alive under the rubble. Many people lost their near ones on this fateful day. The school building collapsed and four hundred students celebrating republic day, died.

The cries were heard everywhere, the cries of pain, of death, of separation. It seemed everyone was caught in the traps of death. There was horror and fright in the eyes of the people of Gujarat. That day children became orphans, women became widows and the rich became poor. The savings of the people, shattered. People were in a state of shock at this natural calamity which hit them so badly.

All the telephone, telegraph and electricity lines were cut off. The people were without food and water for two days till the full-fledged aid reached them. The rescue operation was started by the government and the social organisations. Medical aid was provided at various places. Funds had been raised and people and the government had given liberal donations for the victims. But it was one ghastly sight and people of Gujarat have still to rise from the aftershocks of earthquake be it emotionally or financially. We pray to God to give them the strength to start their life all over again.

A VISIT TO A HILL STATION

Our school closed for summer vacation on 15th May. The heat was intense. I felt dull and uneasy. The first day fell heavy on my shoulders. However, there was a surprise in the evening. I received a telegram from my uncle at Shimla. It was an invitation to visit him. My joy knew no bounds. I began to pack up my luggace, books and woolen clothes. I left for shimla the same night. I caught the Kalka Mail. The train left Delhi at 11 p.m. and reached Kalka at 7 a.m. There I boarded the train for Shimla. This part of the journey lay through hilly areas. The train moved like a snake. It passed through many tunnels. The rising hills looked lovely from the train. I enjoyed the scene. When the train reached Shimla, I found my uncle there on the platform to receive me.

I had a very nice time at Shimla. I visited all the beautiful spots. I visited the Mall, the Lower Bazar, the Raj Bhawan, Jakko Hill, Kufri and other places of interest. I went to orchards. I went for long walks in the mornings and evenings. I viewed the hills, the plants, the trees, the flowers, the birds and animals. I sat on a roadside stone and looked all around me. It was so cool and refreshing. Everything looked fresh and green. The nights were even more beautiful.

I finished my vacation homework in a few days. My uncle used to teach me at night. The regular meals, good diet and good diet and good climate made me healthy. I stayed there for one month. I came back to Delhi in the latter part of June. The visit was really a nice one and I can never forget it.

A HOUSE ON FIRE

Accident always present a terrible sight. They have now became common and daily occurrences are even fatal. A house on fire is also an accident which causes destruction of property and human lives.

I can never forget 13th of March 2001. I was asleep when all of a sudden I was awakened by the cries of ?Fire! Fire!? I came out saw that a house in my colony was on fire. It was a multi-storeyed building from which the flames were rising high in the sky. There was smoke all around. It was a dreadful sight. All were confused and panicky. Some people were busy throwing buckets full of water; others were throwing sand and dust on it.

The owner of the house was sitting dazed and his family members were crying for their valuables. The owners of adjoining houses were also confused not knowing what to do. They were just praying for the fire brigade to come quickly.

Soon, the fire brigade arrived. Fireman fought the fire bravely. They started throwing water from all sides with the help of hose-pipes. Some of them climbed the ladder and threw water from above. They were able to bring the fire under control in three hours. A beautiful multi-storeyed building was burnt to ashes. Luckily there was no loss of life. The owner of the house was totally ruined and wept bitterly. All sympathised with him. The cause of the fire was not known, there were only guesses. Some said it was due to short circuit, others said it was due to cylinder burst. No one knew what exactly had happened. It was really an unfortunate day and I still tremble with fear when I remember that scene.
