In the electrolysis of water (a) Name the gas collected at the cathode and anode respectively. (b) Why is the volume of one gas collected at one electrode double that at the other? Name this gas? (c) How will you test the evolved gas?

    Answer:

                        (a)  gas is collected at the cathode and  gas is at anode.                                     (1) (b) The gas which is collected in double the amount in the electrolysis of water experiment is hydrogen. This is because  contains 2 parts of hydrogen element and 1 part of oxygen element by volume.              (1) (c) Hydrogen gas burns with a pop sound when the burning splinter is brought near the gas. If a smoulding match stick is brought in contact with oxygen gas, it starts burning brightly.
