      With the help of a suitable example, explain how ionic compounds are formed. State any three general properties of ionic compounds.

    Answer:

                      Ionic compounds are formed by the transfer of electrons from one atom to another. These compounds are composed of one part of metal and other part of non-metal. For example. Sodium oxide             (2) Properties of Ionic Compounds (i) These compounds are water soluble.      (1) (ii) These compounds have high melting and boiling points.                                                   (1) (iii) These compounds conduct electricity in molten form or in the form of aqueous solution.                                                             (1)
