Formation of coal is a long drawn process spread over various periods. Elaborate the statement with examples in Indian context.

    Answer:

Coal is called a fossil fuel because it was formed from the remains of vegetation that grew as long as 400 millions year ago. The most important element in the plant material is carbon, which gives coal most of its energy. 4 Coal fields in India are attributed to two main geological ages, namely Gondwana period (200 million years in age) and in tertiary period deposits (55 million years in age). While Gondwana coal has high carbon content found in Damodar Valley (Jharia, Ranigang and Bokaro), Godavari, Mahanadi, Son and Wardha, Tertiary coal with comparatively low carbon content found in North-Eastern satates of Meghalaya, Assam, Arunachal pradesh and Nagaland.
