Answer:
The
nationalist tensions emerged in the Balkans because of the following reasons:
(i) Ethnic Variation: The Balkans was a region of geographical and ethnic
variations comprising modern day Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Greece, Macedonia,
Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Slovenia, Serbia and Montenegro. Their inhabitants
were known as slavs.
(ii) Disintegration of Ottoman Empire: A large part of
Balkans was under the control of the Ottoman empire. The ideas of romantic
nationalism in the Balkans together with disintegration of the Ottoman empire
made this region very explosive.
(iii) Subjugation: Soon many foreign powers attempted to
subjugate these newly independent states. The Balkan people tried to claim
independence by using history to prove that they had once been independent.
(iv) Mutual Jealousy: Balkan area became an area of
intense conflict, since these Balkan states were fiercely jealous of each other
and each hoped to gain more territory at the expense of others. Each big power
like Russia, Germany, England and Austria-Hungary had shown interest in extending
their control over Balkan area.
