up his expensive Western-style suits and adopted the Indian dhoti and kurta.
(ii) There were nationalists like B.R. Ambedkar who never gave up the Western-style
suit. Many Dalits also wore three-piece suits, shoes and socks on all public
occasions.
(iii) A woman wrote to Gandhiji from Maharashtra that she
was too poor to buy khadi, so she wore a nine-yard long sari.
(iv) Other women like Sarojini Naidu and Kamala Nehru,
wore coloured saris with designs, instead of coarse, white homespun khadi.
