[a] The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and Tsunami occurred on 26th December, 2004, with an epicentre off the coast of Northern Sumatra, Indonesia. It was an under-sea earthquake with a magnitude of 9%. This quake triggered the tsunami (a series of immense ocean waves), which reached out across the Indian Ocean, devastating coastal areas as far away as East Africa. Indira Point, the Southernmost point of Indian Union, also got submerged under the seawater due to this tsunami.
