    1. In the middle latitudes, east coast regions receive more rainfall than their western counterparts.
    2. Windward slopes of the hills receive abundant rainfall but leeward slopes are almost dry.
    3. In the tropics, west coasts are wetter than east coasts.
    4. Precipitation is abundant in middle latitudes.
Which of the above statements is/are correct?

    A)  1 only

    B)  2 only

    C)  1 and 2 only

    D)  3 and 4 only

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

The middle latitudes are under the influence of the westerly winds which blow from the west. These winds carry moisture from the oceans before they reach the western coasts of the continents and bring rainfall to the western coasts and eastern coasts are comparatively drier. When a hill range (such as Western Ghats in India) comes across the moist laden winds, these winds cause heavy rainfall on the windward side as they are forced to ascend along the hill slope. These winds have to descend along the slope of leeward side and in the process they become hot and dry and do not bring much rainfall. Thus the leeward side of a hill range is almost dry. The tropics are under the influence of trade winds which below from the east. Thus they cause heavy rainfall on the eastern coasts and eastern coasts are comparatively dry. Tropical lands receive more rainfall than the middle latitudes.
