In which region do we receive maximum solar radiation at the earth's surface?

    A)  Tropical rainforests

    B)  Tropical hot deserts

    C)  Sub polar areas

    D)  Highlands of Central Asia

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Although sun's vertical rays are over the tropical rainforests for most post of the year, it is tropical desert rather than tropical rainforests which receive maximum solar radiation. This is due to the fact that tropical rainforests areas remain cloud covered for most part of the year whereas there are practically no clouds over tropical hot deserts. The amount of cloud cover and its thickness, dust and water vapour which determine the transparency of the atmosphere affect the reflection, absorption and transmission of solar radiation. Atmospheric gases are essentially transparent to visible light, but suspended particles of liquid or solid material can absorb or reflect light. A thick cloud may allow less than 10 per cent of sunlight hitting it to reach the earth's surface. Clouds generally behave like mirrors; they bounce sunlight off in difference directions rather than absorbing. Reflected sunlight is permanently lost to the earth.
