    Consider the following statements:
    1. Effectiveness of Coriolis force decreases from equator towards the poles
    2. Moist air is heavier than dry air.
Which of the above statements is/are correct?

    A) 1 only

    B) 2 only

    C) Both 1 and 2

    D) Neither 1 nor 2

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Effectiveness of Coriolis force increases from equator towards the poles. Its effect is zero at the equator. In other words, there is no deflection in the wind direction at the equator. This deflection is maximum at the poles. If we assume that there is 100% deflection at the poles then the deflection at \[{{30}^{o}}\] and \[{{60}^{o}}\] latitude will be 50% and 86.7% respectively. Moist air is lighter than dry air. This is proved by the fact that water vapours rise up in the air because denser dry air pushes the water vapour upwards.
