In the given figure, if the slope of line 1 is m, then m in terms of h is

    A)  \[\frac{h}{1+h}\]

    B)  \[\frac{-h}{1+h}\]

    C)  \[\frac{h}{1-h}\]

    D)         \[1+h\]

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Here, as we can see from the figure that the line 1 intersects x - axis at \[(h,0)\] and y-axis at \[(0,h+m)\]. Now, we know that slope of the line is given by ratio of the difference of y-co-ordinates to the difference of x- co-ordinates of the points, the line passes through. It is given that the slope of line 1 is m and it passes through \[(h,0)\] and \[(0,h+m)\]. \[\therefore \]  \[m=\frac{(h+m)-(0)}{(0)-(h)}=\frac{h+m}{-h}\] or            \[-mh=h+m\] or            \[m+mh=-h\] or            \[m(1+h)=-h\] or            \[m=\frac{-h}{1+h}\]
