    Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was the greatest leader of modem India. He was a great political worker. He was born on October 2, 1869 at Porbandar in Kathiawar. His father, Karamchand Gandhi, was the Diwan of the Kathiawar state. The young Gandhi was an ordinary boy. He was married at the age of thirteen. After passing the matriculation examination in India, he went to England for higher studies and came back as a barrister.
    Gandhiji started his public life in Africa where he went as a lawyer to plead the case of a Parsi firm. There he started Satyagraha against the policy of racial discrimination followed by the South African government. He succeeded in his mission there. He returned India in 1915 and joined the National Congress and soon became one of its greatest leaders. He dominated the Indian politics from 1919 to 1947. This period is rightly called the 'Gandhian Era' in the history of India. He led the national movement during this period, gave it a new turn, character and meaning of a movement.
