Directions: A wooden cube is painted blue on all the four adjoining sides and green on two opposite sides i.e., top and bottom. It is then cut at equal distances at right angles two times vertically (top and bottom) and two times horizontally (along the sides) as shown in the figure where the dotted lines represent the cuts made. Study the diagram and answer the following question. How many cubes will have only one face painted in Blue?

    A)  1

    B)  2

    C)  3

    D)         4

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

As shown in the adjoining figure, let the upper face and the RHS face of the cube be colored. Then, clearly, the rows of smaller cubes (formed by cutting the large cube into 64 parts) which are indicated by dots, have none of their sides colored. Since there are 9 such rows and each row consists of 4 cubes so there are 9x4=36 cubes which are not colored at all. Hence, the answer is.
