The given diagrams show shadows of a pole at different times on a sunny day. In diagram A, the pole casts the shadowat 11.00 a.m. Predict, what time the pole will cast the shadow in diagram B.

    A) 9.00 a.m.

    B) 12.00 noon

    C) 2.00 p.m.

    D) 4.00 p.m.

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

In the morning and evening time, the Sun is at eastwards and westwards respectively to the pole. The Sun rays will fall on the pole from side wards, hence the shadows formed in morning and evening time will be the longest. As the Sun rises in the sky, from morning till noon, the shadow will decrease in size and will be minimum at noon. Similarly, from noon to evening, as Sun approaches to set, the shadow will again increase in size. Given figure 'B' represents the longest shadow, therefore, it would be 4:00 p.m. in the clock.
