"A clock struck off the hours in silence of the shadows, and I heard nothing. My lamp began to run out of oil and produced only a pale light, but I still read on. I could not even take out time to raise the wick for fear of interrupting my pleasure".
Read the above passage and answer the following questions:

    (a) What impression do you get about the reader from this passage? What is he trying to tell?
    (b) Why could he not take out time to raise the wick?

    Answer:

    (a) From the passage, it is clear that the reader is so engrossed in reading that he lost the track of time. He could hear nothing and was completely oblivious about other things. He read for so long that the oil of the lamp was burnt. He is trying to describe the impact of printed books on him.
    (b) He did not take time out to raise the wick because he feared that getting up would interrupt reading and spoil the enjoyment of reading.
