Direction: Read the passage carefully and answer the following question.
An object of mass 1.5 kg travelling in a straight line with a velocity of \[5\text{ }m\text{ }{{s}^{-1}}\] collides with a wooden block of mass 5 kg resting on the floor.
This object sticks with wooden block after collision and both move together in a straight line.
The velocity of the combination of these objects after collision is

    A) \[8.5\text{ }m\text{ }{{s}^{-1}}\]

    B) \[9.5\text{ }m\text{ }{{s}^{-1}}\]

    C) \[1.15\,\,m\,\,{{s}^{-1}}\]

    D) \[1.5\,\,m\,\,{{s}^{-1}}\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

According to law of conservation of momentum, \[{{m}_{1}}{{v}_{1}}+{{m}_{2}}{{v}_{2}}=({{m}_{1}}+{{m}_{2}})v\] Or \[(1.5\times 5)+(5\times 0)=(1.5+5)v\] Or \[v=\frac{7.5}{6.5}=1.15m{{s}^{-1}}\] Thus, velocity of combination of these objects after collision is \[\text{1}\text{.15 m}\,\,{{\text{s}}^{\text{-1}}}\].
