Two heater wires of equal length are first connected in series and then in parallel. The ratio of heat produced in the two cases is [MNR 1987; UPSEAT 1999; MP PMT 1996, 2000, 01;  AIIMS 2000; MP PET 1999, 2002; BHU 2004; Pb PET 2004]

    A)            2 : 1

    B)            1 : 2

    C)            4 : 1

    D)            1 : 4

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Power consumed means heat produced. For constant potential difference \[{{P}_{\text{consumed}}}=\text{Heat}\propto \frac{1}{{{R}_{eq}}}\] \[\therefore \frac{{{H}_{1}}}{{{H}_{2}}}=\frac{{{R}_{2}}}{{{R}_{1}}}=\frac{R/2}{2R}=\frac{1}{4}\] (Since \[{{R}_{2}}=\frac{R.R}{R+R}=\frac{R}{2}\]and \[{{R}_{1}}=R+R=2R)\]
