10th Class Science Light - Reflection and Refraction Question Bank Light

  • question_answer
Light is incident from a medium into air at two possible angles of incidence \[\text{1}\text{.2}0\] and\[\text{2}\text{.4}0\]. In the medium, the light travels 3 cm in \[0.\text{2}\] ns, the ray will

    A)  suffer total internal reflection in both cases

    B)  suffer total internal reflection in case 2 only

    C)  have 100% transmission in case 1

    D)  have partial reflection and partial transmission in case 2

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Velocity of light in the medium\[=\frac{3\times {{10}^{-2}}}{0\cdot 2}\times {{10}^{-9}}=\]\[1\cdot 5\times {{10}^{8}}m/s\]. Since,    \[\mu =\frac{{{v}_{a}}}{{{v}_{m}}}=\frac{3\times {{10}^{8}}}{1\cdot 5\times {{10}^{8}}}=2\] \[\therefore \]critical angle\[={{\sin }^{-1}}\frac{1}{2}={{30}^{o}}\] Now, both the given angles of incidence are less than critical and will therefore suffer refraction. So, options [a] and [b] are not possible. Further during refraction, a ray gets partially absorbed also. So option [c] is also not possible. Hence correct option is [d].
