Electrification of railway track is being done mainly because

(i) To reduce the burden on coal and petroleum.

(ii) To increase the speed of trains.

(iii) To increase the carrying capacity of goods and passengers.

(iv) To provide pollution free travel to the passengers.

(v) To avoid unnecessary delays.

(vi) To provide cheaper transportation.

At present 23 % of the railways is electrified.
