    Answer:

In year 2000, two special schemes were launched by government of India with special target groups as 'poorest of poor' and 'indigent senior citizens'. The functioning of these schemes is linked with the network of the PDS. (a) Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) was launched in December 2000, to create a hunger free India in the next five years. (i) AAY identifies one crore of the poorest among the BPL families covered under the targeted PDS who would be provided twenty five kilograms of food grains. This quantity has been enhanced from 25 to 35 kgs w.e.f. April 2002 and the number of families has increased from 1 to 2 crores. (ii) State governments ensure that the end retail price is retained at Rs. 2 per kg for wheat and Rs. 3 per kg for rice. (iii) After identification of the beneficiary families, they are issued 'Antyodaya Ration Card'. (b) Annapurna Scheme (APS) has been launched in April, 2000. It aims at providing food security to meet the requirements of senior citizens who remained (i) Uncovered under other schemes. (ii) The beneficiaries are given 10 kg of food grains per month free of cost.
