Amol has three objects, X, Y and Z. He puts X into a measuring cylinder with 30 mL of water. Then he puts Y and Z one by one into the same measuring cylinder as shown
Which of the objects has/have a volume less than 30 mL?

    A) X only

    B) Y only

    C) X and Y only

    D) X, Y and Z

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

When only X is added, volume of water increases 20 mL (from 30 mL to 50 mL) only. When Y is added, water level rises another 25 mL (from 50 mL to 75 mL). Hence, X and Y have a volume less than 30 mL. On the other hand addition of Z increases volume from 75 mL to 125 mL i.e., an increase of 50 mL.
