                 The Mauryan Empire was divided into provinces and the provinces divided into districts. Provinces during the Mauryan age with their capital were: Uttarapatha" Taxila; Dakshinapatha- Suvamagiri; Prachya-Pataliputra;   Kalinga-Tosali: Avantiratha-Ujjain. Ashoka appointed a representative in each province. The representatives were chosen for their ability and not on the basis of birth or high connections. They enjoyed considerable freedom in the administration of their provinces.
