Four identical beakers, W, X, Y and Z, were set up as shown below and placed under sunlight for a day. In which beaker will the concentration of carbon dioxide be the highest?

    A)

    B)

    C)

    D)

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

The concentration of\[C{{O}_{2}}\]will be the highest in beaker Y as there are two organisms i.e. a plant, Hydrilla and an animal, water snail which will release\[C{{O}_{2}}\]through respiration. As the beaker is covered with a black bag, so Hydrilla will not be able to perform photosynthesis to take in \[C{{O}_{2}}.\]In beaker W, there is only one organism i.e. water snail which will produce\[C{{O}_{2}}\]through respiration. In beaker X, the plant Hydrilla will produce\[C{{O}_{2}}\]by respiration but it will also absorb \[C{{O}_{2}}\]through the process of photosynthesis. In beaker Z, there is no organism to respire and to release \[C{{O}_{2}}\]in water.
