The given diagram shows a respirometer that is used to measure gaseous exchange in gram seeds. The apparatus is maintained at a constant temperature.

Which of the following is correct regarding it?
    (i) The gas pressure at X will fall as \[{{O}_{2}}\] is absorbed during respiration and\[C{{O}_{2}}\], is absorbed by potassium hydroxide solution.
(ii) The fluid level at Y will fall to compensates the loss of pressure in X.
(iii) The gas pressure at X will rise as 0;, is given out by seeds and \[C{{O}_{2}}\] is released by potassium hydroxide ;solution.
(iv) The fluid level at Z will rise due to loss of pressure at X.

    A) (i), (ii) and (iv) only

    B) (ii), (iii) and (iv) only

    C) (i), (iii) and (iv) only

    D) (i), (ii) and (iii) only

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

In the given respirometer, pea seeds absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide during respiration. Pea seeds will absorb oxygen from the test tube (X) and carbon dioxide released by seeds will be absorbed by potassium hydroxide solution present in the test tube (X). When all the oxygen from the test tube (X) is absorbed by the seeds, then a suction due to loss of pressure will be created in the test tube which results the drop of fluid to rise in Z and hence, fluid level at Z will rise. The fluid level at Y will fall to compensate the loss of pressure in X.
