Rohan set up an experiment as shown in the figure. What will he observe after sometime?

    A) Lime water in test tube Y turns milky.

    B) Lime water in test tube Z turns milky.

    C) Potassium hydroxide solution in test tube X turns blue.

    D) Temperature in the flask will go down.

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Lime water in test tube Y does not turn milky whereas lime water in test tube Z turns milky. This is because, as the air passes through test tube X, potassium hydroxide in the test tube X absorbs the carbon dioxide from the incoming air. Therefore, in test tube V, lime water does not turn milky showing that the air does not contain carbon dioxide. Thus, carbon dioxide released by germinating seeds is taken into the test tube Z due to suction pressure. Lime water present in test tube Z turns milky by reacting with carbon dioxide. This shows that germinating seeds release carbon dioxide during respiration.
