    The athlete finishes the race at about four minutes because at this time, concentration of lactic acid is maximum in the muscles. Accumulation of lactic acid is due to anaerobic respiration which takes place in the muscles during fast running. After finishing the race, concentration of lactic acid starts decreasing as it is converted into other products.
