    Answer:

    The distribution of the railway network in India has been influenced by physiographic and economic factors. Physiographic factors:
    (i) The level land of the great plains have favored the development of railways.
    (ii) The flood plains of Bihar and Assam and the rugged topography of the Himalayan region have led to very few railway lines.
    (iii) The sandy deserts of Rajasthan and hilly tracts of Sahayadri are unfavorable for the development of railways.
    Economic factors:
    (i) Rich agriculture and greater industrial activity on the great plains have favored the development of railways
    (iii) The National Capital of India is New Delhi is also located in the great plains of India and it is also headquarters of the Northern railway Zone.
