By-election: It takes place when any seat in the Parliament or State Legislative falls vacant due to the death of resignation of a member. Then fresh elections are held to fill that vacancy only. Mid-term elections: If the Lock Sabha or any of the State Assemblies is dissolved before the expiry of its full term, then elections are held to constitute a new House. Such elections held out of schedule are known as mid-term elections.
