The mean yearly salary of an employee of a company was Rs. 20,000. If the mean yearly salaries of male and female employees were Rs. 20800 and Rs. 16800 respectively, then the percentages of males and females employed by the company are respectively.

    A)  80% and 20%

    B)         70% and 30%

    C)  55% and 45%

    D)         50% and 50%

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

     Let the number of male and female employees be x and y respectively. Then \[20800\,x+16800y=20000\,(x+y)\]  or           \[208x+168y=200(x+y)\] or            \[8x=32y\] or            \[x=4y\] % of male employees \[=\frac{x}{x+y}\times 100\]                 \[=\frac{4y}{4y+y}\times 100=80%\] % of female employees \[=\frac{y}{x+y}\times 100\]                 \[=\frac{y}{4y+y}\times 100=20%\]
