    (a) Why did the painter depict 'Germania' as a fallen woman with crown and standard thrown aside on the ground?
    (b) Analyse the reasons for such a state of Germania which prompted the artist to visualise her in such a state?
     

    Answer:

    (a) The Frankfurt Assembly was convened by 831 elected representatives. In May 1848, these representatives drafted a constitution for the German nation, for setting up a constitutional monarchy under Frierick Wilhelm IV, King of Prussia. But their hope was shattered by the rejection of the king. The chance of uniting the German nation under one ruler was lost.
    (b) The artist (Julius Huban, 1850) painted 'Fall of Germania' two years after the failure of Frankfurt Assembly. Hein his painting had depicted a forlorn and fallen woman who is shattered?all hopes are lost for her?next to her are the symbols of German monarchy, the crown and the standard. Germania symbolised German nation, which was betrayed by the rejection of the ruler of Prussia.
