If it is 12.00 noon at Greenwich, the local time at different longitudes would be as follows.
    Longitude????????? Local Time
    1.\[82{{{\scriptstyle{}^{1}/{}_{2}}}^{o}}E\]?? 5.30PM.
    2. \[{{15}^{o}}C\]E?????????? 2.00PM.
    3. \[{{90}^{o}}C\]W?????? 6.00AM.
    4. \[{{30}^{o}}C\]W????????? 10.00AM.
Which of the above pairs is/are correctly matched?

    A) ?1 and 2 only????

    B) ?1,2 and 3 only

    C) ?1,3 and 4 only?? ???????????

    D) ?1, 2, 3 and 4

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

?As the earth rotates around its axis, it completes one rotation in 24 hours and moves through \[{{360}^{o}}C\]. Thus a difference of \[{{1}^{o}}C\] longitude will make difference of 4 minutes in time. Since the earth rotates from west to east, places located in the east, gain time while those located in the west lose time. Thus, when it is 12.00 noon at Greenwich, time at \[82{\scriptstyle{}^{1}/{}_{2}}E\]will be\[82{\scriptstyle{}^{1}/{}_{2}}\times 4\]minutes on \[82{\scriptstyle{}^{1}/{}_{2}}\times \frac{4}{60}\] hours or 11/5 hours or 5.30 hours. Since longitude \[82{{{\scriptstyle{}^{1}/{}_{2}}}^{o}}\] is in east this place will gain time and it will be 5.30 pm at \[82{{{\scriptstyle{}^{1}/{}_{2}}}^{o}}E.\] Similarly time at \[{{15}^{o}}C\]E will be \[15\times 4=1\,PM,\,{{90}^{o}}W\]will be \[90\times 4=\]behind Greenwich or 6.00 AM. (Places in the west lose time) and at \[{{30}^{o}}C\]W; time will be \[30\times \frac{4}{60}=2\]hours behind or 10.00 AM.?????????????????????????????????? ??????????????????
