    2. International dateline coincides with \[{{180}^{o}}\] longitude but deviates to make allowance for contiguous lands.

    A) ?1 only?????????? ??????????????

    B) ?2 only

    C) ?Both 1 and 2???? ???????????

    D) ?Neither 1 nor 2

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

?The Prime Meridian is drawn as a straight line joining the North Pole with the South Pole and represents the starting point with respect to local time at different longitudes. On the other hand the International Dateline coincides with \[{{180}^{o}}\] longitude but deviates largely to make allowance for contiguous lands, countries and islands which would otherwise have two different dates, thereby creating confusion among the people. Near the Arctic Circle, the International Date Line is deviated in such a way that its eastward bulge passing through Bering Strait avoids division of the easternmost part of Siberia. South of the Arctic Circle, this line deviates westward to allow the Aleutian Islands to be included in the Alaskan peninsula. In the southern hemisphere, at about \[{{5}^{o}}S\] latitude, the International Date Line is shifted eastward. This avoids cutting through the Ellice, Wallis, Fiji and Tonga island groups and permits them to have the same day as the neighboring New Zealand.???????????????
