(i) ADA (Adenosine Deaminase) deficiency is caused by deletion of a gene encoding for ADA. Patients suffering from this deficiency can be cured by (a) Bone marrow transplantation the defective immune cells are replaced with healthy cells from a donor. (b) Enzyme replacement therapy in which functional ADA is given to the patient by injection. (c) Gene therapy involves correction of genetic defect by delivering normal gene into the individual or embryo to take over the function of non-functional gene. Here, a functional ADA cDNA is introduced into the patient to cure ADA deficiency.
