    What is self - incompatibility in a plant? Discuss its importance also.

    Answer:

    Self - incompatibility is a genetic phenomenon of preventing self - pollination, i.e. pollen from same flower or other flowers of the same plant are prevented to fertilise the ovules by inhibiting pollen germination or pollen tube growth in the pistil.
    Importance of Self - incompatibility
    (i) It prevents self - pollination.
    (ii) It has made plants outbreeder. Outbreeding maintains vigour and vitality of the race.
    (iii) It does not allow raising of purelines that are required for breeding programmes.
