Answer:
(i) Bioreactors are vessels in which raw materials are biologically converted into specific products by microbes, plant and animal cells; and/or their enzymes. A bioreactor provides the optimal conditions like temperature, pH, vitamins, substrate, salt and oxygen for achieving the desired products. (ii) In a continuous culture system, the cells are multiplied on a large scale in a bioreactor. In this, the used medium is drained out from one side, while fresh medium is added from the other side to maintain the cells in their physiologically most active log/exponential phase. Thus, a large biomass leading to higher yield of desired protein is obtained by this system.
