Define decomposition and describe the process and products of decomposition.

    Answer:

The decomposers breakdown complex organic matter into inorganic substances like \[C{{O}_{2}},{{H}_{2}}O\] and nutrients. This process is known as decomposition.
Decomposition process: The processes involved during decomposition are as follows:
    (a) Fragmentation: Detrivores (e.g. earthworms) break down detritus into smaller particles by the process called fragmentation. During fragmentation due to eating and pulverisation in digestive tracts, detritus is changed into fine particles which have large surface area.
    (b) Leaching: Water soluble nutrients go down into soil and thus get precipitated as unavailable salts by the process called leaching.
    (c) Catabolism: Detritus get degraded into simpler inorganic substances by fungal and bacterial enzymes by the process called catabolism.
