The average of two numbers increases by 20 when one of the numbers is doubled and increases by 25 when the other number is doubled. What must be the original average?

    A)  90

    B)  22.5

    C)  45

    D)  None of these

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

    Let the tow numbers be \[x\] and \[y\]. and its average \[=\frac{1}{2}\,\left( x+y \right)\] No, by condition, \[\frac{1}{2}\{2x+25)+2y\}=\frac{1}{2}(x+y)+20\] \[\Rightarrow \] \[2x+2y+25=x+y+60\] \[\Rightarrow \] \[x+y=15\] \[\Rightarrow \] \[\frac{1}{2}(x+y)=7.5\] \[\therefore \] Required average = 7.5
